NFL Conference Championship Spread

January 23, 2010

There are two games this Sunday with the winners going to Superbowl XLIV. The long shot are the Jets who are currently 13/2 on the futures bet. Hopefully we will have some good games as surprisingly so far there really hasn’t been very many playoff games decided in the last couple minutes (other then Jets last week & Cardinals beating the Packers 2 weeks ago).

Chargers vs Jets Playoffs

January 16, 2010

?The New York Jets kicked off Wild card weekend last week with an inspiring win in a rematch of their week 17 game against the Cincinatti Bengals. This week they travel to San Diego to face the Chargers with a chance to move on to the AFC championship game. The Jets face a tough test this week against a San Diego team riding a 12 game win streak and as a result are 8 point underdogs.

?Like the other AFC divisional game these 2 teams play very different styles of football. The Jets like to run the ball and play stifling defense while the Chargers pass very efficiently and play mediocre defense.  The Jets led on offense by rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez finished the regular season with rankings of, 20th overall yards per game, 1st in rushing yards per game, and 31st in passing yards per game. The Chargers franchise QB Philip Rivers led their offense to rankings of, 10th overall yards per game, 31st in rushing yards per game, and 5th in passing yards per game. The real strength of the New York Jets is their defense driven by shut down cornerback Darrelle Revis ended the regular season with rankings of, 1st in overall yards per game, 1st against the pass, 8th against the run, and 1st in scoring. The Chargers defense is anchored by pro bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman and finished with rankings of, 16th in overall yards per game, 11th against the pass, 20th against the run, and 11th in scoring.

? In this game look for the jets to try to do what they do best, play great pass D and run the ball down the throat of the San Diego defense. The most important thing however is for the Jets D to get pressure on the quarterback and force mistakes. The Jets’ offense will need help in this game, they are not very impressive. If the defense can cause pressure and force a turnover or more that will help keep the pressure off the offense. New York can win this game if they run the ball effectively and work play action off of that, they need to wear down the Chargers defense with long drives and more importantly the long drives will keep the ball out of Philip Rivers hands.

?Keys to the game for the Chargers include running efficiently, shutting down the run, and shutting down play action passes. Now the Chargers don’t need to change philosophy for this game and suddenly become a running team, but if they can run efficiently and get that into the defenses mind it will help to slow down the Jets pass rush and give Rivers more time against Revis and the secondary. If the Chargers can shut down the run and force the Jets to pass the ball this game is theirs for the taking; Mark Sanchez had an alright rookie year but he will not be able to pass this team to victory unless the run game is working. The play action pass is where the Jets can hurt you big time, the secondary cannot get beat deep on these passes or even allow short completions on these types of plays.

Saints vs Cardinals playoffs

January 16, 2010

?Following an amazing overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers the Arizona Cardinals are heading to New Orleans with a lot of momentum. The Saints however are coming into this game off of a bye week, but also following a 3 game losing streak to end the regular season after starting out 13-0. The Cardinals will look to extend New Orleans losing streak to make another run deep into the playoffs.

?The Cardinals last week in the wild card round had an amazing day for the offense putting up 531 total yards en route to 51 points. The Arizona defense however gave up a not so brilliant 45 points. That will have to change this week if they hope to win this game, New Orleans was the NFL’s best offense through the regular season even with star quarterback Drew Brees not playing in the last game.

Arizona in contrast of how they’re viewed (offensive juggernaut) was actually quite middling this regular season in terms of offense ranking, 14th in total yards per game, 12th in passing yards per game, and 28th in rushing yards per game.  The Cardinals defense anchored by DT Darnell Dockett and LB Karlos Dansby in the regular season ranked, 20th overall, 23rd against the pass, 17th against the run, and 14th in scoring. The Saints defense led by ball hawking safety Darren sharper were ranked, 25th overall, 26th against the pass, 21st against the run, and 20th in scoring.

NFL Playoffs 2010 WildCard Round

January 6, 2010

The NFL playoffs will start on Saturday the 9th with 4 games in the WildCard Round.

New York Jets +3(-125) at Cincinnati Bengals -3(+105) – 34(1/2) o/u

The Jets come off a victory of 37-0 in week 17 against the Bengals. Along with the Jets winning 7 of the last 8 against the Bengals.  I think you can’t go wrong taking the Jets for +3.

Prediction: Jets +3

Philadelphia Eagles +4 at Dallas Cowboys -4 – 45 o/u

The Eagles lost in week 17 to the Cowboys 24-0  in a game that had meaning with the winning team getting home field advantage.  Though Philadelphia has beaten the Cowboys 6 times in the last 7 games. They both went 11-5 for the season. I think with the Eagles recent loss to the Cowboys the handicappers are pushing people to go for the eagles which I think is a good bet. I think the game will be decided by 3 and picking the eagles will win you the bet.

Prediction: Eagles +4

Baltimore Ravens +31/2(-115) at New England Patriots -31/2(-105) – 43 o/u

Last week the Ravens barely beat the Raiders while the Patriots lost to Houston but the biggest news of week 17 was the Patriots lost Wes Welker for the season. This is Tom Brady’s go to receiver and will definitely will be an issue for the Patriots offense. In the last 5 match-ups between the teams the Baltimore Ravens have lost all 5. I still think Wes Welker along with a strong Ravens D will cause problems for the Patriots and I am going to take Baltimore +4.

Prediction: Baltimore +4

Green Bay Packers (+1) at Arizona Cardinals (-1) – 47 o/u

In week 17 the packers dominated the Cardinals 33-7. It is hard to bet when you don’t know who is going to show up for the Cardinals. They handily defeated the Vikings but then lost against the niners. Green Bay has won 6 out of the last 7 against the Cardinals and Green Bay looks to have a good rhythm right now. I am going to go with the Packers +1.

Prediction: Packers +1

NFL Week 5 Betting Preview

October 16, 2009

It is Week 5 of the NFL, we got through week 4 which had some of the weakest match ups so far this season. We all knew Raiders were pitiful but 44-7 with Giants players saying it felt more like a scrimmage basically sums up the games last week.

NFL Week 5 has some better match ups along with a couple double digit lines. There is definitely two tiers in the NFL you are either a legit playoff contender or a team that will be happy to win 3-4 games this season.

Games to Watch – NFL Week 5 Odds

Baltimore Ravens (3)  vs Minnesota Vikings (-3) - Can Favre & Pedersen lead the Vikings over the Ravens defense. Offshore sportsbooks seem to think so with an advantage of a field goal.

My Opinion: I tend to think the Vikings with the passing & running threat will be able to beat the Ravens . I would pick the Vikings by -3.

New York Giants (3) vs New Orlean Saints (-3) – The Saints are coming off their bye week and have to take on the Giants who are also undefeated. The Giants beat the Raiders easily and effectively last week but now taken on a much better offense and defense. This is the must watch game of the week and whoever wins this will likely be the NFC favorite.

My Opinion:  This is a tough game to pick, I know it will be close but I am going to go for the Giants to cover the spread.

Denver Broncos (3.5) vs. San Diego Chargers (-3.5) - Will LT come back and be effective (I hope so, I have him in fantasy..he is killing me)? Broncos beat the Patriots last week and are 5-0  but they had a couple close wins and could easily have another loss or two.

My Opinion: I am going to take another favorite and choose the Chargers.

Yahoo Vs ESPN Fantasy Football

August 13, 2009

The NFL football season is close and every football fan knows its time to do their research because NFL Fantasy Football is more important then school ever was (or is). Every year the debate is where to host your fantasy football league, do you go with Yahoo or are you loyal to ESPN because you can’t seem to avoid the ads they constantly show. We will be comparing the free options because no one wants to pay anything to the companies when that money should go to the winner of the league.

Here are the facts:

Yahoo Fantasy Football
Pros-

  • Clean Interface
  • Free Real Time StatTracker (about time)
  • Track multiple leagues
  • Records of past fantasy football seasons (keep your dynasty going)
  • Smacktalk (Let everyone know why LT can’t score a TD last season…disaster 1st pick)

Cons -

  • Have to reserve a draft time ahead of time (so that means planning…)

ESPN Fantasy Football
Pros-

  • Free Real Time Scoring
  • “Expert” Advice and Analysis
  • Mock Drafts (Practice makes perfect)
  • Telephone Support Line (1-888-549-ESPN…we know your going use it so we saved you some time looking it up)
  • Replace inactive managers (there is always 1)

Cons -

  • Can’t have decimals past the tenth place for scoring (yea…its nit picky)

2009 NFL Draft

May 5, 2009

The 2009 NFL draft was held on Saturday the April 25th as well as finishing on the 26th. There wasn’t much surprise with the first pick as the Detriot Lions took quarterback Matthew Stafford as the first pick of the draft. They came to terms with him on the 24th so when they selected him on Saturday it wasn’t a surprise.

The top 10 in the Draft:

1. Matthew Stafford QB – Lions

2. Jason Smith OT – Rams

3. Tyson Jackson DE – Chiefs

4. Aaron Curry OLB – Seahwaks

5. Mark Sanchez QB – Jets

6. Andre Smith OT – Bengals

7. Darrius Heyward-Bey WR – Raiders

8. Eugene Monroe OT – Jaguars

9. B.J. Raji DT – Packers

10. Michael Crabtree WR – 49ers

One of the surprise picks was the first WR taken from the draft was Darrius Heyward-Bey picked by the Oakland Raiders. Crabtree was definitely the better rated WR but dropped down to #10 picked by the 49ers.  It was said that Al Davis liked the speed of Herward-Bey and chose to forgo anyalsts pick of the best WR in the draft.
